Scope
A Cambridge House, Bed and Breakfast Hotel Inn is a gracious Boston hotel alternative with easy access to Harvard, M.I.T., and Tufts Universities, Cambridge and Boston. Located conveniently just minutes from Harvard Square and the Red Line subway to Boston, A Cambridge House, Bed and Breakfast Hotel Inn offers elegant accommodations and turn-of-the-century grandeur with all the modern hotel conveniences.
Cambridge House engaged Approach Architects to renovate the Carriage house portion of their Inn. The existing Carriage house had five guest rooms. We were asked to convert one of the existing guest rooms to an ADA accessible guest room and to refurbish the remaining guest suites.
Our Approach
The main level of the Carriage house had three guest suites and they all shared a common bath. In order to provide an ADA accessible guest suite & private wash room, we combined two of the existing guest rooms into one large suite. We then reconfigured the remaining guest suite and common bath into an expanded guest suite with its own private bath.
The second floor of the Carriage house had one small guest room with a tiny bath. This existing guest room did not have the proper fire egress required by code. Therefore, as part of our renovations, we designed a new dormer that housed the expanded bathroom as well as a new window which provided the proper egress from the guest suite out on to a new fire escape.
The garden level of the Carriage house had another tiny guest room with its own private bath. We expanded this suite by excavating the long since abandoned “manure pit” and provided an additional means of egress with a new metal stair that led up to the garden above.
