Scope
Jamie & Merideth purchased their home on East Orchard Street in 2003 with the intention of renovating the existing one-story bungalow to accommodate their expanding family. The existing house was non-conforming as it spread into the side yard setbacks. Enlarging the house required a special permit from the zoning board of appeals.
The program for the larger home included a family room, eat-in area, kitchen, formal dining and living rooms, office, three bedrooms, master suite, and kid@rsquo;s play room.
Our Approach
The formal area of the first floor was to remain in the front of the house. A new open-air covered porch replaced an enclosed porch leading to the original entrance location. Inside, the now double height entry foyer leads to the formal living room, new study, and new dining room. The rear of the house has become the primary living area, with a new continuous kitchen, breakfast area, and family room. An entry from the garage was added, leading to a new mudroom off of the kitchen. The living and entertaining space can now be expanded outside onto a new larger deck and patio.
The laundry has been relocated from the basement to the second floor. The addition allowed larger bedrooms even with the addition of a third bedroom and a larger master suite. A full stairway gives access to the finished attic, where consideration was taken for the addition of a bathroom.
