Scope
After buying their house in Andover, MA, David and Cathy rapidly realized that they were starting to outgrow it. They contacted Approach Architects to design their expansion. The program for the addition included two additional garage bays, a mudroom, a breakfast area, a game room, additional space in the master suite, a screened porch, and a larger outdoor entertainment area.
Our Approach
All the new construction took place off the rear of the house. The existing small deck was replaced by a much larger wrapping deck and screened porch that could be accessed from all the rooms on the rear of the house. Two additional garage bays were added behind the original side-access basement garage. Above, a mudroom and a laundry room were created in the center of the house with direct access from the garage and outside. The mudroom leads either to the renovated kitchen with its open, sunny breakfast area or into the new game room.
The game room was designed to be the heart of activity in the house. The space is large enough for an ample sitting area in front of the oversized fireplace with plenty of remaining room for a billiards table, a wet bar, and dozens of guests. Clerestory windows set into roof dormers filter light in from above while large double-hung windows frame views of the yard beyond.
On the second floor, the master suite was expanded to create a private area for the homeowners. The master bath was relocated to above the breakfast area addition, and it now includes a double vanity, whirlpool tub, and a large bay window overlooking the backyard and gardens. This freed interior space for a large walk-in closet and adjacent dressing area. A laundry hookup was secreted in the wall to allow for the future addition of a washer and dryer.
